Does Gastric Surgery (Such as Bariatric Surgery) Impact the Risk of Intestinal Inflammation?

چکیده
Background: The prevalence of morbid obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is on the rise in association with a Western lifestyle. Both conditions are characterized by chronic inflammation. Bariatric surgery (BS) is a recommended and widely used approach to address severe obesity and its related comorbidities. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) are the most frequently performed procedures worldwide. Evidence is scarce on outcomes of BS in IBD patients. Summary: Systemic and adipose-tissue inflammation seems to decrease following BS. Different studies observed decreased serum levels of inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α) along with a reduction of insulin resistance both after RYGBP and SG. Several authors documented postbariatric improvement of concomitant chronic inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, and psoriasis). There are only few retrospective case series on outcomes of BS in IBD patients. These studies reported safety and feasibility of BS and improvement in IBD status, manifested by prolonged disease remission and decreased use of pharmacotherapy. Weight loss outcomes were excellent and similar to those of Received: August 17, 2016 Accepted: August 21, 2016 Published online: September 15, 2016 Prof. Dr. med. Benign, Premalignant, and Malignant Lesions Encountered in Bariatric Surgery
BACKGROUND Obesity is associated with several comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obstructive sleep apnea. It is also well established that obese patients have an increased risk of several types of cancer like kidney, pancreas, endometrial, breast, and others. The bariatric surgeon needs to be aware of the problem of benign tumors and cancer in obese patients as well...

BACKGROUND After many cycles of weight loss and weight gain, more and more morbidly obese patients undergo bariatric surgery, like gastric banding or gastric bypass, as the ultimate treatment for their obesity-problem. Since women of reproductive age are candidates for bariatric surgery, concerns arise regarding the potential impact on future pregnancy. METHODS English-language articles were ...

Abstract Introduction: Obesity and upper gastrointestinal disorders are the public health problems in the world and Iran. The role of routine preoperative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy of the morbid obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery is a subject of discussion. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between gastric pathological findings in morbid obese patients w...

CONTEXT The prevalence of obesity has been increasing in modern society. Roux-en-y gastric bypass is a bariatric surgery that involves the exclusion of significant part of the stomach. Atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer have been associated with infection by Helicobacter pylori. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the presence of endoscopy findings and histological changes in morbid obese p...

Introduction: Nowadays, bariatric surgery is considered to be the most effective technique in the treatment of morbid obesity. In the current study, the effect of Laparoscopic Gastric Plication (LGP), a new technique, on the serum protein profile of obese patients has been investigated following surgery. Materials and Methods: Serum of 16 obese subjects with mean body mass index (BMI) of 41.2±5...
